School, Teachers, Tuition and The Learning Lab

You know, school teachers often say, don't give any of these materials to tuition centers, especially The Learning Lab , because these documents are copyrighted, private and confidential, etc., etc. ? Something like that, right? Especially if you are a student in the GEP like me, your teachers would say that all the time. Well, maybe we shouldn't share those documents that your teachers say are private and confidential. But they also go on to say, don't go to tuition centers because they teach you the exact same things you learn in school and if you pay even more attention, you will get the same benefits and you don't have to waste your parents' precious money on tuition fees ? A lot of times, yes? Even if you are not in the GEP, your teachers are sure to say that, especially those core subject teachers. So my main goal in this post is: to find out whether the teachers are right about tuition, and whether they teach you the same things as what you learn

Fun facts about Vietnam

Image
1. Vietnam has two flags. That is so because it is a Communist country. One has the red background with the yellow star, and the other has the red background with the yellow hammer and sickle -- the Communist symbol. Flag of Vietnam Flag of the Communist Party of Vietnam 2. In Vietnam, people drive on the left side of the car and the car keeps on the right side of the road, unlike in Singapore, where drivers sit on the right side and the cars keep on the left side. The type of car in Vietnam is called a "left-hand drive". Left-hand drive 3. Vietnamese actually resembles Chinese dialects.  For example, the Vietnamese word for "thank you", "cảm ơn", sounds like the Chinese word for "thanksgiving", "感恩". Also, the words for "male" and "female", "nam" and "nữ", sound like the Chinese words, "男" and "女". Toilet signs -- "nam" 4. The sun rises e

Googol Song - Numberphile

There are ways to waste your time until departure. Like playing golf or reading Jeffrey Archer. Some people spend some proper afternoons on Wagner opera. But Friday by Rebecca Black is three minutes you won't get back! So I have tried to write a song that sets a record for how long a song can possibly go on. Are you ready, Matt? It goes, 1, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. That's right, let's do it again! Come on! Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, You can sing along if you like. Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Although not if you're in a library or on public transport. Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. We need to get a few more of these done. How about we do three harmonies. That way we'll get it done a lot quicker! All right, here we go! Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. Nearly, hang on. Hang on. Phew. Well, bang the drum and play the victory bugle. What you did just there is sing a googol. *ding* One with a hundr

A Child's Voice

For the Singapore Symphony Children's Choir By Lee Chin Sin When I speak, I would like for my voice to be heard. Though I'm weak, I grow strong with each step and each word. I can fly! Every breath brings me closer to the sky. Let me speak, Let me try. When I laugh, Can you hear all the joy that I hold? It's enough, Like a flicker of hope in the cold To warm the dark. The tiniest flint can light a spark. You will see, Just laugh with me! Like the clearest rainbow on the bluest day, Listen to my song and float away! Every feeling paints a different shade. My hopes, my prayers, my joys, They're all here in my voice. When I cry, Not afraid to give voice to my fears, If you try, You can feel all my dreams and my fears. Like the sun, there's a smile that's just bursting to shine through, Cause I know That I have you! Like the clearest rainbow on the bluest day, Listen to my song and float away! Every feeling paints a different shade

Poems

The Chimney Sweeper: When my mother died I was very young By William Blake When my mother died I was very young, And my father sold me while yet my tongue Could scarcely cry " 'weep! 'weep! 'weep! 'weep!" So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep. There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved, so I said, "Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare, You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair." And so he was quiet, & that very night, As Tom was a-sleeping he had such a sight! That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack, Were all of them locked up in coffins of black; And by came an Angel who had a bright key, And he opened the coffins & set them all free; Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing they run, And wash in a river and shine in the Sun. Then naked & whi

Jabberwocky

Image
Hi! In school, we learnt a poem called Jabberwocky! It is a nonsense poem that, well, sort of makes sense. It's by Lewis Carroll and was featured in his book Alice in Wonderland . It goes like this: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! and through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my bea
